I'm the merchandising supervisor at the new Borders in Stockton. I am telling you all this because one, I like to brag...like you all didn't know that already and two, I want you all to come visit me at the store. The expected opening for the store is August 14. I will keep the blog posted if the date changes.

I just completed two days of training in the Folsom store. I will have two more training days next week. I am very fortunate that I am able to complete training before the Stockton store opens, this is not a luxury that all employees are granted. The folsom store is very busy, I was amazed at how much traffic that store had in the two days I was there. One evening that had open mic night, and a live band playing in the cafe'. The music was great, and it was wonderful to see so many customers enjoying themselves. I look forward to when the Stockton store has there events.

Well, another promotion for Borders is the store will add life to Stockton. As many of you Stocktonians know, there is not much to do in Stockton after 8 p.m. Borders will be a place where people can come hang out, enjoy a book and coffee while listening to great music. And, best of I will be there :).

Oh and by the way if I find out that any of my friends are still shopping at Barnes and Nobles after Borders opens I will have to disown them.

If you have not experienced Borders yet, once you do you will be hooked for life.

I look forward to seeing many of you there when we open (don't let me down :()...)

Ok everyone take care, and hey lets see some blogging from my former classmates, I need to know what is going on in your lives.

Ciao'
Joe

Well It's About Time....Yeah I'm Talking About ME!

I know, I know, why haven't I posted anything? Well the answer is easy when I am not being graded on my efforts, I slack off. I must admit though I miss reading about everyone's life from class. So, this is my feeble attempt to get back into the blogging mode...We'll see how long it lasts. Now before I go into talking about me...(which I love to do :)) Where is everyone? I notice Lori has had a few postings, but what about the rest of you??? I know your out there, now spill it, give me details...

Ok, well summer school at Delta has been very busy. Nutrition class is very interesting and very useful, but it does require some work, 5 tests in 6 weeks drains me a little, but it is still easy compared to university work. My computer class is becoming more interesting, next week we will start learning about the program Access. Many of the people in that class are first time computer users so we are moving slowly. My all time favorite class is my Improv. Theatre class, it is so much fun. I suggest everyone should take this class, just because it is the one time you can act like a total fool and nobody will judge you. Some of the skits I have performed are...a crazed taxi driver, Dr. Phil, a man who wants the last can of corn, and also I was Wendy in Peter Pan. Many of you may think I am crazy for the last skits I just described, but everyone one of them have been a unique experience and a lot of fun. Many of the skits I am in, I don't realize the comedy portrayed, until the audience bursts into hysterical laughter. It is a very satisfying feeling to make people laugh. Most of the time when I am in front of people I am presenting a speech on a serious topic. It is nice to have no rules. Hopefully I will be able to work in more comedy in my speeches in the future. A suggestion to everyone, the next time you are at a party suggest an Improv. game. It gives you a chance to really know who people are, and you may make some very good friends. Well, that about sums up summer school...now lets see...

that's right, I just got a new job. I was hired as the Merchandising Supervisor at the new Border's Book Store in Stockton. I start my training next week, I am very excited about this opportunity. I know it will be hard to work full time with 4 months left of school, but that is all that's left is 4 months YEAH!

I look forward to this fall semester at Stanislaus, I will be at the Turlock campus all day Tuesday and Thursday. No more Stockton campus. Even though I have appreciated the availability of the Stockton campus, I really enjoy the Turlock campus more. I fell as I am more of a student there.

Anyways, I hope everyone is well. I hope to see some blogging from everyone. And, I also hope to see all of you in the Fall.

Take Care,

Joe

Improv. I thought the class would be an in depth look at each individual program, but instead we are learning how to turn the computers power on and off. Hopefully the class will be more intriguing in the coming weeks. If not I guess it will be an easy A. I miss Stanislaus, Delta is just not a challenge any more (Sigh...). I am actually looking forward to my classes in the fall. Normally I would not look forward to hard work and homework, but I need a challenge. I feel as though I am enrolled in elementary school for adults. First of all thanks Lori for posting the class pics. Now every one in the world can see how funny we look. Also it is to bad to hear about you car accident, but I am glad you are ok.

Well, I promised I would write about my trip to Vegas, but remember the slogan still stands, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." With that in mind I will not indulge in all of the details.

I came home a winner, after six days in Vegas I came home with $500.00 more then I left with. All together I won over $2500.00 well I was there. I started winning the first day and my lucky streak continued until the end of the trip. I won most of the money on roulette and blackjack, but to win big I had to bet big. Thank goodness I won. I have never been that lucky and I don't expect to again. I also won big on dollar slots within 10 minutes at the Luxor I had won $400.00 on the same dollar slot. And to prove how lucky I was when leaving the MGM (where I stayed) the last day I had two quarters in my pocket, I put them in a machine and won $50.00 on the first pull. Lady luck was on my side for this trip. Because of these winnings I had a great time, I treated myself to two lobster dinners, seafood buffets, and a glass of 150 Grand Mariner after dinner drink. I also bought a few things for myself. This was the first trip where I did not have to worry about how much money I spent. I am ready to go back to Vegas...Even though I don't plan on being so lucky.

Besides gambling I ventured up and down the strip many times. My favorite spot was the hotel Paris. It is so beautiful outside and inside. The Bellagio fountains are also very incredible. Make sure if you like roller coasters to ride the one at New York New York, it is wild fast and a great ride...Especially after a few drinks it really accelerates the experience.

As far as partying there is only one night where I am having a little difficulty remembering what happened, but after that hang over I did not drink as much the rest of the trip. We went to four clubs. Studio 54 was my favorite. It is a big club with five dance floors and five bars. The crowd was young and hip. If you plan on going clubbing in Vegas make sure you wear your clubbing attire, otherwise you will not fit in. I met some very interesting and fun people and had a great time. We also went to the Ghost Bar which on the 55 floor of The Palms. It had a great view but there was 1,000 guys to every 2 girls. So, as expected we did not stay there very long.

Well, I believe that is as much as I can tell you without incriminating myself. Just lets leave it to say I had a great time, and I am glad I was single during the trip. I will leave the rest up to you.

Ciao'
Joe

This is it...

This is my last blog entry for my online journalism class. I will continue to update, but this will be my last graded entry. Even though this is exciting to be done, it is also sad :(. I figure my last entry should promote my greatest accomplishment; and that is my creation of my fist website. Morada Market, I used to work at Morada Market for five years. Morada Market is a community based grocery store, that prides themselves on exceptional customer service. Morada Market is the place where everybody knows your name, Cheer's stole their theme from us...Not really, but Morada Market has been operating since 1936. Please look at my website and let me know what you think. I am not sure how long the website will be at the current address, it is my hope to eventually have the URL at www.moradamarket.com. I will keep everyone posted when this occurs.

As always your comments are very appreciated. Send me and email (look in the 'contact me' section on the right), or you can post a comment.

Thanks to everyone for your patronage to my blog. Besides academic teachings I have learned something about each person in my class. The class started out with eight students, but know we are down to six--the best six I might add :). I know that most people like to see their name in print and especially when there is something nice to say about them. With this is mind here are some 'props' for all the people in my class. Jean-I have known you the longest out of the rest of the class, and know I have been able to get to know you even better. Thank you for all of your positive comments and support, and thanks for always being a supportive and great friend. Lori-(The anti-follower) Lori this is now our second semester together, and I know we have another class together in the fall. As before it has been a lot of fun having you in class. Even though you are always on my case about being 'The Leader' I enjoy every minute. Thank you also for being a great friend. Kei-I first met Kei at delta a couple of years ago, but not until recently have I really got to know who Kei is. Kei is a fascinating person the more I get to know him, the more I can see his great sense of humor and his wonderful personal pride. Brian-I have had many conversations with Brian during our web design time. Each conversation with him always leaves me thinking how intelligent he is. Brian always gives me a chance to think deeper into life and what is happening around me. Thanks Brian you have helped me to become a more critical thinker. Patty-I have just recently got to know you. Patty your inspiration and your love of friends and music is very special. Patty has a great heart and does many wonderful things for the people she cares about. I look forward to seeing Patty in Turlock in the fall. And, last but not least, Dr. Ellison-What is there to say, I mean how many professors go out with their students and eat sushi. Dr. Ellison not only have you taught many useful principles in the class, but you have made it fun. Thanks Dr. Ellison, you are one of the 'cool' professors on campus.

Well, that about raps it up for the class. If I have forgot anyone, that means you have not left an impression on me, and that you need to work on your self concept. I'm just kidding, I hope I remembered everyone... hmm...oh well, that's it for now. Instead, I would like to look back on this past semester of my online journalism class and the many things I have learned. First and the most relevant is blogging. Before this class I had never heard of a blog. Now, I have posted over 40 blog entries and I have started two of my friends on blogging. And, not only that, but I have also been involved in a controversy with my blog. This blog has given me a chance to express who I am and what I care about. Many times in life you may want to take a stance on an issue, but your surroundings will not permit it. Well, blogging gives you the chance to say and do as you feel. I have enjoyed the experience of blogging, and I plan on continuing to update this blog even after the class is over. My future is rapidly approaching, and I believe that many changes are on the horizon. This blog is a way that I can keep in contact with a mass amount of my friends. In closing thanks Dr. Ellison for giving me the tools to express myself and my thoughts. Not only have I enjoyed this form of self expression, it has helped me learn more about myself.

I figure I am supposed to include a link in each blog, so here is the hotel I will be staying at in a couple of weeks in Vegas, MGMGrand.

Blogger is Bigger and Better

Hey This Is Cool
I just wrote my previos blog entry using google's 'blog this' button. If you go to Google's Toolbar web page you can download the google toolbar. The toolbar puts a google search bar in your browser with many other cool options. Once you have installed the toolbar you can go to the option section and select the 'blog this' button, it is a blogger icon. When you are on a page that you are interested in blogging, you can click the button, and it will automatically open up a blogging screen in your account, and include the title and link to the page you are on. This new tool makes blogging much easier.

Thanks google once again for making use of the internet fun.

P.S. With the rising cost of gas any break in the price would be welcomed. This site is a great source to get information on the lowest on highest priced gas stations in California. It looks as though gas prices are going to continue to rise. But, I figure the gas prices will be very low around election time! What a great economy we have raise the cost of living, but do not raise the pay. And, our dependency on oil is ridiculous. There are many forms of alternative energy sources, but the big corporations will make sure we never use them. The leaders of these big corporations sit high in their offices making millions of dollars a year, but they will not sacrifice a penny for the rest of the country. Where have ethics gone in this country? As a communication major, I am constantly being instructed on having good ethics. I hope that I can always stand true to what I believe in, and not let greed cloud my judgment.

The Budget Crisis

This entry may be short, but like Jean I need to vent my frustrations. The budget crisis is causing many problems in this state, and these problems are very noticeable on campus. The students, instructors, and the rest of the faculty can all notice, and have all been effected by this lack of funding. I have recently learned that my graduation application was misread, and the records office had me graduating in the summer. I am actually graduating in the fall. The reason this is such a problem is because of that mistake, I did not receive a priority registration date. As a graduating senior, I should be one of the first eligible to register, but now my registration date in half way into the registration process. I hope I still can get the classes I need, and want. I attribute this problem to the budget crisis. If there was more than two people working in the records office these types of problems may not occur. How can a large institution run properly with all of the cutbacks? How effectively is everyone going to adjust to these changes? I have had one incident that has directly effected me, and I doubt it will be the last.

Thank you leaders of California for taking away one more good thing this state had.

Morada Market...The Place for Great Meat...And Friendly Service

Morada Market's new web site is coming. Well, actually career hunting. I am trying to find that perfect career that will always make me happy : ). I know it may take a while to find it, but why not set my goals high. I was thinking of becoming a journalist, but based on the responses to my past few blogs, that idea is out...(my self concept as a writer has been destroyed, well not really). It is hard to fit a career with who I am and what I like. I enjoy being a leader, I like the fact that people can feel confident in me, and that they can come to me with their questions or problems. With this in mind I have narrowed down my career options to three choices.

1: Training and Development. ASTD Home
2: Human Resource Management. SHRM Home
3: Office Management. Academy of Management

I have changed my mind many times these past few months, but I believe these three options fit who I am and who I want to become. I look forward to this summer, when I begin to start networking.

If you have any advice, or if you know any contacts in the above related fields please contact me via email in the 'contact me' section, or post a comment.

Happy Blogging

I thought people would care???

In my last blog I wrote a lengthy article about how students and instructors are suffering from the recent budget cuts. I took a stand and supported my opinions with relevant evidence. I also took the initiative to contact the California State Governor, and the local news mediums. I expected students like myself to either post comments and offer some type of feedback, or even write letters themselves. Maybe this is not a big issue with other students. My passion for reform may end with me. Whatever the case if something is to be done, people need to make themselves heard. Even with my recent experience of lack of support I will continue to stand up for what I believe in. Hopefully others who believe in making some important changes will join with me and stand up for their rights.

What is wrong with California????

The Governor has proposed to increase fees by 10% for undergraduates and 40% for graduate students at the University of California and California state University. Why make it harder for people to go to school?????? I know I have been discussing this issue in past blogs, and also one of my fellow classmates, Jean has had some thoughts on the issue, this is because it is IMPORTANT! The less education people have the lower class jobs they will obtain, if they obtain any at all, then there will be more welfare, and government aid. Why not help people get an education so there is not as much government aid. Oh, No, that would be uncalled for...our state must cut education and make it harder and harder for people to succeed. The more people succeed the more money they can contribute to the state...Oh, no, we don't want that either. Wait a minute...I keep saying 'we' it is not we, just because I belong to this state does not mean I agree with it's policies. From now on I am not part of the 'we' group (the education cutting, destroy or economy group). If California is the 5th richest economy in the world, Wow the rest of the world must really be hurting. Come on, we are the laughing stock of the rest of the nation.

It is time to make a change. Support education and help every person who wants to learn. Do not turn them away. Do not raise tuition. Do not fire teachers, and professors, who have worked their whole lives to obtain these jobs. Make education rewarding for the students and their teachers. Education is supposed to be one of the few things in life that is always respected, and now it is being taken away.

I am fortunate, that I will be graduating this year, but if I did decide to go on for a Master's Degree in this state, I would not be able to afford it. But, what about the people who are going to be starting college next year. What will they do when they cannot afford school? What happens when they have to work at minimum wage jobs, because they cannot afford a higher education. Well, they can spend 10 working hard and trying to move up the ranks. But, what then happens when companies need people who have a college education, and there is none? So, when these companies eventually cannot find anymore employees, they eventually close their businesses. And then, there is another money contributor that has left California. Well, it may be true we will not see these effects for many years, but they are still possible.

It is time to act. Everyone can do their part. Start by writing a letter to our Governor. Tell the Governor what you think. At this moment I am sending the Governor a link to my blog. Please also post your comments, any reinforcement to this issue will help. I have also sent a letter and links to my blog to KCRA Channel 3, The Record, and The Modesto Bee.

Working together we can make a difference!

I'm trying to make you think...NOW DO IT!!!!

I have come to the conclusion that blogging is fun. Now, I know that is a simple, but yet broad statement, let me explain. I write about what is important to me, and on occasion what other people believe is important to them. Normally when I write I boldly state how I feel, regardless of who it offends. It is my intention to 'grab' peoples attention. If I were to write boring stories that didn't upset people, I would not have many readers. I believe that good journalism has to be bold at strike out at people. It makes a statement that people can have true emotional feelings about. Many times people leave me comments about how they agree with me, but even more people leave comments about how they disagree and why. I enjoy that, I want people to think about what they read, and get passionate about it. So, if you feel I am not considerate of everyone's feelings, or you feel I am downright not thoughtful, that is not necessarily the case. This is why blogging is fun. So, what do you think makes good journalism, or story telling, or whatever you want to call it? Is it a good idea to stir up emotions? Or, should a writer be sensitive to every readers needs? Let me know what you think.

Politics the economy and other nonsense...

Does anyone else feel that California is starting to lose it's appeal. California was once the golden state with the perfect climate, lush agriculture, and a rich economy. Now California is the laughing stock for the rest of the world. What happened? Gray Davis and the enron scandal surely did not help, but either did the Gubernatorial recall election. We replace one governor with an actor, and now our former governor is trying his hand at acting. Wow it gets very complicated. What I am writing should stir up some emotions. The issue of our economy in California is something every California resident should be concerned about. And, how about the California colleges, there is no money. Why would you take away money from the schools. The harder it is for students to get into college the less enrollment. The more people that opt not to go to college, the more un-educated people. Just what we need is more welfare. If this trend continues California will be a total welfare state. In today's Stockton Record there is an article explaining that UC Berkeley had to turn away thousands of students, because of their budget cuts. I know this is also true with my school CSU Stanislaus, they have capped enrollment, because of the lack of funds. I feel fortunate to be in my last year at school, but they are also raising tuition fees AGAIN, what was once affordable education, is now turning into private school costs. These types of reasons are driving people out of the state. Why would someone want to live in a high priced economy just to support everyone else but themselves. If I was to have children someday, why would I stay in California? I would not be able to afford to send them to school, that is if there were allowed to attend. Wouldn't it make more sense for our government leaders to take a cut in their pay and their million dollar personal spending? Oh no, that would be criminal, it is easier to tax the average Joe and make them pay for all of their mistakes, and high spending habits. Another issue is housing costs. People with the high paying Bay Area Jobs cannot afford housing in the Bay Area. These people are now moving into the central valley homes, where the prices have increased. The home developers realize their new clientell so they can raise the prices to fit these needs. What about the fresh out of college, first career person like me. How will I ever afford a nice home, it may take many years before that happens. California is in trouble. Myself like many other people feel the same way, "MOVE OUT." That is my plan when I am done with school. I hope for the sake of the rest of the citizens of California things will change. Good luck. Please leave your comments, this is a very important issue that needs to be discussed.

The Career Search

Recently I have been searching for careers and job opportunities. I will be graduating in December of this year (2004), but I thought I would get a head start on the search. Web sites such as monster, career builder, and jobfinder are just a few of the web sites available to help in a job search. The trouble I am having is finding a career/job that fits who I am and what I like. As a communication major there are many jobs available, but which one fits me the best? I know this is a predicament that most everyone goes through in their life at one time or another. Besides being nervous about finding a job that fits me, I am also anxious to start a new life. After I graduate I plan on moving away from home, preferably out of California, and starting a new life. The thought of this is scary, but also very exciting. Well, I guess I need to be patient and enjoy the rest of my education first, before I get too excited about the future. I guess back to the school papers, and the job search. If you have any job search stories you would like to share, please post a comment.

Back to school...Already?

Does it seem like spring break is always too short? Maybe that is because instead of having a week of relaxation most of us have to work on projects or long term assignments. Whatever happened to the idea of going to Mexico and partying for spring break? I know I sound like I am just trying to get people to feel sorry for me, well, I guess that approach just will not work. It's now time to get back in the groove and finish up some of these major assignments. I am currently away from my home city on my Easter break. I am doing research in a local newspaper for my organization communication class. I cannot say where or exactly what the research is on, for the sake of the privacy of the organization. I have to say the environment in a newspaper is fast paced and very exciting. There is always something going on in the paper in one of the departments. It could be the busy bustling of papers in the advertising department, the clicking and clicking in the news room, or the customer service tones of the circulation department. The paper is a well structured organization that requires every department to follow through on their part, so the rest of the paper can function smoothly. If there was a break down or a problem in one area of the problem it could cause problems in many other areas of the paper. If you are intrigued and would like to learn more about how newspapers work this is a great link. As I have discussed earlier there are also many online journalism sites, most all large papers have there own online paper. You can refer to previous blog entries titled 'Online Journalism,' or you can click on the newspaper links I have posted under the link section on this page.

Anti Semitism

I received a research proposal from a friend about how the movie "The Passion" has started a debate on anti Semitism. I decided that this is a very interesting and intriguing topic to write about.

There have been may people that believe Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion" portrays many anti Semitic views. As a Christian I may be biased to believe otherwise, and I do. I feel the movie portrays the life of Christ as written in the bible. I do not believe that it was the intention to make people hate the Jewish people. Besides it was not the Jewish people who crucified Christ, it was all the sinners in the world who did.

Through some research on the web I found that there are still many anti Semitic feelings and issues in the world. This like many other things in our lives is a problem. Here is a link that has many other links to anti Semitic listings, explaining what it is and some of the history of the hatred. Many people may not know but, Shakespeare one of the worlds most famous playwrights was anti Semitic, for more information on this click here. Many Christian people have and maybe still do hold anti Semitic feelings. Here is a link to many anti Semitic stories and legends written by Christian people.

The point of this article is to prove that anti Semitism is a problem. Like many other cultural problems the first step to making things right, is to become aware. I hope that this small tid bit of information will help people become aware of this problem, so hopefully we can work together to resolve it.

I welcome any thoughts you have on the issue. You may have noticed that I like to try to get feedback from people who read my blog. I have to admit it does not happen very often...Hint...Hint. So, in another attempt for audience involvement, I am asking for your help. If you are reading this you must be interested in what I write about. So, in that case I need some ideas for future blogs. Ok, now your part, email me your ideas. Think of something that intrigues you. Think of something that you want to know about, but do not want to take the time to research. This is a great opportunity, you give me the idea, I research it, and then post my very biased opinion for everyone to read. Just think you may never have this chance again. I first went to a few sites to compare prices, I eventually ended up at www.hotels.com and booked a room. I decided after the fact to go to the actual website for the hotel chain, Ramada Hotels and I found that the same room was $30.00 less than the discount hotel site. So, I went and cancelled the reservations with hotels.com and I booked one with Ramada. The cancellation policy of hotels.com said there was a possible cancellation charge. I assumed being I was canceling within five minutes there would be no charge. Well, I was wrong there was a $25.00 cancellation charge. I later called the company and they said the only reason they accept for cancellations is if there is a death in the family. I understand this is partially my fault for not understanding their policy correctly, but come on their policy is ridiculous. Not only are their prices more expensive, but they profit off their customers, even when the customer has nothing to show for it. A word of advice be careful when using online reservation sites, they can be tricky. I suggest that if you need a reservation whether it is a plane or a hotel, go directly to the companies site. They normally have fair prices and you can expect the same service from them, as if you were to make your reservations the old fashion way--over the phone.

CSU -VS- UC

As a student at CSU Stanilaus I have always wondered what the major differences were between CSU and the UC colleges. My interest in the subject is due to a good friend of mine who attends a UC and is also a communication major like myself. Many times I have had conversations with him regarding communication topics such as theories or current research, but he never has a clue of what I am talking about. He has already finished his major work which consisted of 30 units which is the same as my school requirement. I wanted to find out why he did not have much knowledge about communication after finishing his major studies. I mean I am only half done with my major studies, and I seem to know far more about core communication principles. Well, after many discussions I found out that his normal class size is of 400 or more students in a lecture hall. All of his communication classes were strictly lectures, normally taught by graduate students. In my school the normal class size is of 20-30 students. I know most of my professors prefer a student teacher ratios of 15-20:1. This small class size leaves room for much discussion and activity based learning. Most of the classes my friend was enrolled in was straight lecture, without any disscussion. Maybe that form of learning is desirable for some, but definitely not for me. I also feel it is appropriate to add in that the individual I am refering to at the UC is very smart, and has a very high gpa that I am very envious of. I want to make this clear as not to offend any readers.

Another reason this topic is so interesting to me is the value of the degree. It is popular opinion that a degree from a UC is a higher accomplishment than the CSU. I know in the case of my friend he is required to take 60 more units than me, but how much more is he really learning? I feel that the standard should be what you know, and not where you went. It is very possible that a student from the CSU has a larger knowledge base than the student from the UC. I guess this all comes down to the student themselves. I know one difference is the CSU system prepares us for graduate school, and careers, where as the UC prepares their students primarily for graduate school. In the case of my friend the only reason he chose communications as his major was because it was something to do before graduate school. My major which is actually called organizational communication, which prepares me for graduate school, but also prepares me for the work world. I realize I have a very biased opinion regarding this topic. I have included some links below to help give some more background information on the differences in the two different institutions. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on the subject, please post your comments using the 'comment' link below.

Links:

Comparison of the CSU and UC system.
Another comparison site.
FAQ'S regarding college.

Continuation of Facnet Discussion #2

I'm famous, I'm in the paper. Well, maybe I'm not famous, but in Today's Modesto Bee there is an article regarding the controversy of facnet. Click here for the story. I am a little disappointed though that out of a 15 minute interview with the reporter she only quotes one sentence from me. The reporter also refuses to understand what a blog is, even after explaining to her what a blog was she writes, " Joe Tassano . . . wrote about Facnet on his log [sic] . . . " You would think that a reporter would be familiar with all forms of journalism, hmm... maybe not. I look forward to see how this article may effect the idea of keeping Facnet public.

Continuation of Facnet Discussion

Well, this may not be the normal link heavy blog entry, but I cannot pass up this opportunity to update potential viewers on the facnet discussion. (If you have not read the previous blog entry please do so before continuing). After many emails between my online journalism Professor and myself, my blog site was posted on facnet. I was hopeful that my recent entry would spark some interest and passionate comments. Well, I have not seen a large amount of comments, but I did have an interview today with a reporter from the Modesto Bee. The reporter had an interest in what a student's perspective was. I am very happy that this issue has sparked some interest, I'm sure this will not be the last we hear about it. I have much to say about the interview, but I feel I will be better off if I let the Modesto Bee print the article first. Now that my blog is under more scrutiny of the public/media eye, I need to bee slightly more conservative in what I reveal. The one thing I will say, just in case the future bee article distorts my feelings, "Facnet should be private, there is too much that is being revealed to the public, and until the listserv is private, the users of facnet should take more caution in what they openly discuss, they are revealing themselves to the public, and in all rights it can be published, it may not be ethical, but it is not against the law." In closing I hope that the minor actions I have taken will help resolve the issue with Facnet and all of it's participants. I would also like to give everyone the link to access Facnet, you may feel that I am crossing the line, or going against everything I have said, but on the contrary I am hopeful that this will increase the immediacy of the problem of this being a public listserv. The more outsiders that view this listserv may give the users more reason to realize the potential of a major problem, if it is not one already. Facnet.
P.S. Please excuse me if I sound like a hypocrite, being I did view many of the posts, but my intentions are to help people to be aware of the potential problems, of this outside viewing. When I first started viewing the posts I thought it was very interesting to see what some of my former and present instructors are writing about. Well, this was fun and interesting, but then I realized that I just gave myself the privilege of a Ph.D. I have not earned that privilege. I realize the discussion board is meant for all faculty, but the posts that I was interested in, were topics written by professors, and they were targeted for that academic level. Not only have I not earned this privilege, by accessing these posts, it is giving me a deeper look into who my professors are. Now don't get me wrong, I encourage myself to build personal academic relationships with professors, but not by reading their thoughts on a disscussion board, without them knowing. Some of the information included in these posts discuss matters about how to deal with problems with students such as cheating, I should not have access to know the 'battle plan' of my professors. There is a structure and level of power a instructor holds over their students, this is expected. When a student has inside information about what their professors are collaborating, this decreases the level of power the professor has, and this makes it more difficult on the professor, and their students. I believe I have made my point through my large amount of rambling, but some of you may ask, why do I care? As a communication major, one of the main principles we learn are ethics. I have come to understand how important ethics are in my life, and I know I have to act on what I believe in. I used to be one of those people, that when a problem arises, I let someone else deal with it. Not now, I am speaking out to prove that I do care, and that ethical problems like this one need to be dealt with to protect the privacy and control of professors and their students.

I encourage any comments you may have, you can reach me <INPUT TYPE="button" VALUE="here."onClick="location.href='mailto:joetkool@netzero.net'">

Continuation of The Abundant Online Media

After reading this article (our homework assignment for online journalism class) I realized how relative my last blog entry was. This article explains how the print media is decreasing and how electronic sources are the future. Can you imagine everyday well you are on your way to work, you look on a small electronic device that delivers the type of news stories you are interested in? Sounds exciting to me. And, as I said before it is up to our generation to make it happen, I'm ready. After our recent class trip to the Modesto Bee, it sparked an interest to what is available online as far as news sources, particularly online newspapers, or other sources that are not affiliated with a network news channel. To my surprise there is an endless amount of material out there. Here is one link that lets you browse online newspapers around the world. This web site gives you access to many types of news sources around the world. Finally another link, this one is a web site dedicated only to technology news.

Some of you may say "who cares?" Well, with the abundance of online sources now available, what does this mean to the future of the traditional sources. We had this discussion on our trip to the Modesto Bee, and it is very obvious that our whole world is being engulfed with the continues evolution of technology. It is very possible by the time I am in my 30's that the internet will be the main source of news information. With this is mind it is time for our generation to start thinking how we can benefit from this expanding field of technology. I personally feel that classes such as this where technology is emphazied will give me a great advantage in the work place. Print newspapers and magazines may become a thing of the past, it will be up to us to continue the evolution of technology. This holds many opportunities, for the people who will be graduating soon, and starting work. It may be up to us, to bring the world into the new wonderland of media.

The Ever So Revealing Life of ME

After a trip to the Modesto Bee last night; Jean, Lori, Kei, and I had some very interesting conversations. "A few weeks before a special election last month, the campaign manager for Kentucky democrat Ben chandler bought 42,000 in ads on these web sites." "It was a risky move . . . The ads ended up raising nearly $80,000 in contributions, enough to pay for a torrent of TV commercials . . ." (WSJ, March 15, 2004). Where blogs started out as an outlet for socialization and journals they are now turning into an advertising market. Personally I’m ready to start selling my blog space to advertising companies. The article explains that this trend is still in the early stages, but will most likely be a huge marketing enterprise in the future. The article also discusses other success stories of individuals who started selling ad space on their blogs to pay their bills. Does this mean our personal journals will soon be pasted with advertisements? The individualistic personalities our blogs take on may have to be open to the new wave of marketing.

The following are some links to information regarding blog advertising:
Bloggers views on advertising.
Great articles on the marketing of blogs and advertising.

The internet and the power of communication!

I have noticed recently especially since I have started blogging how much society relies on the internet technology. We have chat lines, instant messaging, email, online dating, and the list keeps going. The internet is a very valuable source for information on any topic idea you may have, but did you ever think that it would become the new way of communicating? I still prefer to pick up the phone and call friends or family, but I have some friends that tell me to instant message them, "It's easier." What about the personal touch of communication. Now in instant messages you can include your emotions through the smiley face :), even this simple sign used to be simple, now there are hundreds of designs describing your every emotion. As a communication major I understand the power of language and words. Words are a way we express ourselves and reveal who we really are. With the internet as a primary source of communication will we start to loose the need for words. Imagine walking down the street talking to a friend, and you ask them how they are, and they hold up a picture of a frowning face. I believe that the communication on the net is a good thing in moderation, but not in excess. Children today have access to the internet and this new form of communication at a very young age. It was not until I was about 18 that I realized the power of the net and communicating. By that time in my life I had already had much exposure to personal communication. It will be interesting to see how this medium will effect children's communication habits. If children start to lose the form of self expression through words, it may be time to limit the access to the net. Time will tell.

Here is a link to a wonderful site, showing statistics and graphs of children of all ages and the amount they use the internet, and what they use it for.
Children and the Net

$$$$$$$$$$

In response to a recent blog written by Jean regarding low carb. diets, I have to say when will the marketing stop. How can so many people fall into this money making trap. I could tell everyone that eating a lot of vegetables and no meat will help you lose weight. This is probably true, then I could start mass producing high vegetable content products. This scheme is a never ending circle that will suck in people and their money. The secret to loosing weight is exercise and eating in moderation. The secret is not what some dead guy wrote about. " Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported Tuesday." Wow, how has he turned into the nations role model for dieting? Take a look at how people are so easily influenced into falling into mass marketing. Step back and analyze the situation before engulfing your pocket book into the current marketing fad.

Please send me your comments on how you feel about Dr. Atkins, and the way our society is engrossed with mass marketing.

Blogs, Blogs, Blogs.

Until recently I had no idea what a blog was. Now it is all I see when I am online there are blogs everywhere. People must now realize that blogging is an easy way to get out your opinions on a range and variety of issues. With all the blogging going on now, does that lead me to believe that people are communicating less in a more personal way? If this trend continues are people going to be totally dependent on technology for their communications? There are numerous sources of blogs. Political blogs are now a giant source of political information, George W. Bush's blog, Howard Dean's blog. Besides political blogs there are blogs with daily news, personal insights and some blogs that have a culture of their own. It is obvious that some people spend a large amount of their lives blogging, here is an example of one person who dedicates much of their time to blogs. Now some people reading this entry may think of me as a hypocrite, for I too am blogging at the moment. I feel there needs to be a line between the level of blogging and the level of personal communication we partake in. It is obvious that we do not sit on the front porch and chat with the neighbors anymore, or we do not sit out back with the family after dinner. Technology has swallowed up most of our social time. Now blogs are just another outlet which gives us reason to put less effort into true socializing. Will this technology help to diminish our personal time with one another? Is the future of our society dependent on technological communication outlets? Or will technology just be another means to help amplify our communication? This is something to think about. I welcome and anticipate any comments you may have, you many contact me via the email or contact button on this page.

Happy Blogging.

The Passion Update

It seems that everywhere I go, there is a discussion of Mel Gibson's film, The Passion. What is most interesting, is I have not met two people who have had the same reaction to the film. Every individual has found a meaning in the film, that relates to their lives. It is truly amazing how a film can influence so many people. It is not like people did not know the story of Christ before the film. Is our society so visually dependent, that the worth of their savior is based on how a cinematographer displays the images? Whether this is true or not, what is important is that people are allowing there hearts to be opened up to this film, and hopefully their faith has be opened too.

I have had many people ask me what I felt about the film. It is hard to put into words the level of thought and emotion the film subjects you to. All I know is the film caused me like many others to think, and reflect on our lives, and why we have what we have. Others have also asked me why they should see the film. This is a hard question to answer, but put simply, everyone should see the film just to see what they can learn from it. A friend of mine has continually asked why they should see the film, and then constantly argues the answers I give them. So I say to everyone who is finding reason to not watch the film, "do not be scared of what emotions the film may reveal in you, experience the life of Christ, and stop trying to have constant control, let go and let your emotions have control of you for two hours, it may be just what you need."

I welcome any comments anyone has, you can reach me by clicking on the email or the comment button on this page.

The following are some links to discussions of the passion, take a look, you may want to add some comments:

Misc. The daily newspaper may still be a primary tool of the publics media source, but the added capability of finding all the news you want online is an added bonus, and it does not cost a monthly subscription fee.
You can see here that the online medium is becoming the predominate source of information and access to the world. Once people learn how to embrace the technology of the Internet and World Wide Web, access to information is at the tip of their fingers 24/7 365 days a year.

What does this mean for the future of traditional print media? At this time it is uncertain how big of an impact the online journalism craze will have on the traditional media. But it is certain that online journalism will revolutionize the way people seek out information in the world.
